Tip’d

About Tip’d

Tip’d (say it “tipped”) is a free iPhone app for keeping track of tips, hours and tip-outs across every restaurant job you work. I'm Joe West, and I make it.

Why it exists

I'm married to a server. She has worked two restaurant jobs at once and done most of the positions in the building: serving, hosting, running food, bartending. She tried the tip apps out there and kept complaining about the same thing: the ads, and the feeling of being nickel-and-dimed by an app that was supposed to help her count her money. So I built her something useful instead: a simple app that does the adding and stays out of the way.

She liked it so much that she pushed me to actually publish it. It went on the App Store in 2026, and servers at several restaurants in our hometown use it now.

What's in it

The feature list came from her notes: log a shift's money, hours and position in a few taps; keep each job apart with its own color; track the hourly pay for the positions that have one; see weekly and monthly averages, best and slowest days, and how much I made an hour after inputting my tips; put money toward goals by hand and see what's left to spend; keep it easy to read, minimal and calm. Past her list came the Year screen for tax time, Spanish, Home Screen widgets, importing a shift history from another app, and, in Tip’d 1.2, due out this month, Siri.

Guides on this site cover the rest of the job: reporting tips, the No Tax on Tips deduction, tip pools and your rights, and more, in English and Spanish.

Why it's free

I see how hard she works for every dollar, and keeping track of it shouldn't be another expense. Logging shifts, your stats, trends, goals, paychecks and imports are free, with no ads and no account. The only optional purchase is Tip’d Widget Pack, a monthly subscription for the Home Screen widgets, and you can cancel it any time in your Apple Account settings. The main app will always be free.

The name
