Tip-outs and your real hourly pay

A paycheck never shows what a shift was worth. Tip’d does: your tips after tip-outs, plus your hours times your wage, divided by the hours you worked. One number, every shift.

Four fields, one answer

Logging a shift takes your hours, cash tips, card tips and what you tipped out to the bussers, the bar or the host stand. Tip’d works out the rest:

Say you worked 6 hours at $5.50, made $84 in cash and $212 on cards, and tipped out $45. Tips kept $251, hourly pay $33, total $284, and $47.33 an hour. The form shows the total as you type.

Your week and your all-time rate

Tip’d's Week card from made-up shifts: You made $1,069 over 31 hours and 5 shifts, $34.48 per hour; $190 put toward goals, $879 left to spend.
The Week screen: what you made, your hours, your rate, and what's left after your goals. The shifts are made up.
Tip’d's all-time hourly card from made-up shifts: $35.32 an hour with tips; weekly average $1,344 over the last 2 weeks, monthly average $6,058 over the last 3 months, best day $479 on Saturday, August 22 at The Anchor, slowest day $70 on Thursday, August 20 at Juniper.
Stats: your hourly with tips over everything you've logged, your averages, your best and slowest days.

Stats also shows your hourly by position, so you can see what bartending really pays next to serving or hosting. Trends shows what one position averages a shift and an hour, by day of the week and shift type; switch the shift type or the job to set a Friday dinner against a Sunday brunch, or one job against the other.

Tip percentage, if you enter sales

Sales are optional. Enter them and the form shows your tip percentage as you type, and the export lists it for every shift, which is how you'll know whether a slow night was slow guests or small tips.

Why the number matters

Your real hourly rate is how you compare a job, a section or a schedule, and it's how you'd know if a slow week fell below the minimum wage your employer owes you. Our guides explain how to work out your real hourly pay and how tip-outs are figured.

Questions people ask

What counts as tipped out?

Whatever you hand to other staff from your tips: a tip-out to the bussers and bar, your share into a tip pool. It comes off your tips before anything else is figured, which is also how the IRS says to report them.

What about a shift with no tips?

Enter the hours and leave the tips empty. A host shift still counts its hourly pay toward your week and your rate.

Can I fix a mistake later?

Yes. Open the shift and change any field; the week, month and year update with it.

Does it cost anything?

No. Logging shifts and all of the stats are free, with no ads and no account. Read more about Tip’d.
